Gingham wrap skirt with ruffles

The Gwen Gingham Wrap Skirt

I looove a good wrap skirt. Extra points if it’s a gingham wrap skirt. They are super flattering and are super adjustable so if you gain 5 or even 10 lbs, it will still look fab on you!

Wrap skirts are a timeless silhouette that is reinvented time and time again. What’s not to love? If you follow me on social media (*cough* IG @rachelandrebeccashop *cough*) then you have seen some of my wrap skirt creations.

If there is one print that I could say sums up fall fashion, it’s black & white gingham. This print is great any time of the year and comes in many different colors and sizes. But the black & white just makes me think of fall.

A timeless silhouette paired with a classic & also timeless print = fall fashion magic.

What takes a classic silhouette up a notch?

Ruffles.

Oh yes, I love a good ruffle.

The Fabric

I knew from the get-go that I wanted to use this iconic and classic print. Gingham comes in different sizes but I love the smaller size the most. The one that looks like a picnic table if it’s red and white. The blue and white one is a classic pairing for spring or summer. But the black & white, to me at least, screams fall.

And fall is my favorite season after all.

Now making a wrap skirt with a ruffle hem out of the black and white gingham is all well and good. You will find a million different ones if you google it from just about every store you can think of. Me being me, I wanted to make it just a smidge different.

Enter faux leather. I am obsessed with really love faux leather. Like, I could use it in every project. It’s just cool & edgy and who doesn’t want to be cool & edgy?

At first, I was going to make the waistband out of faux leather but that seemed too boring and predictable. Why not make a big splash and make the ruffles out of faux leather? BOOM. Done.

I decided to make the ties out of faux leather too so that the ruffles weren’t too lonely by themselves. They needed something to tie them in…😜

Gingham Wrap Skirt | The Design

I first started making these wrap ruffle skirts a few years back after seeing them on some sewing blogs. It seemed like something I could make (I was still fairly new to sewing at the time) so I made my first one out of burnt orange linen. It was awesome and I was hooked.

Fast forward a couple of years, pounds, and moves later I uncovered that orange skirt from a box and decided to wear it. My neighbor saw me and wanted me to make her one too but in green.

It turned out great and was so satisfying to make lol. Something about all those ruffles just makes me happy.

I knew I had to make another one…

My favorite thing about wrap skirts is that they are adjustable. I made my first one when I still had some of my baby weight from having my son. 20 lbs later and it still fits great. That’s a win in my book!

Gingham Wrap Skirt | The Details

The great thing about this gingham wrap skirt is that it is relatively simple. But loads of ruffles around the hem make it an instant hit. It’s both feminine and flirty and fun to wear. You can tie it as tight or as loose as you like so you never feel like it’s going to fall off or show too much.

The body of the skirt is lined with the same gingham fabric so it’s lightweight but not see-through. I always add a little more usual on the overlap portion so there is no worry about flashing anyone when you sit down. One less thing you have to worry about!

The faux leather worked great for the ruffles and made the skirt a little more edgy than girly. The faux leather adds body to the ruffles but not weight so the ruffles keep their shape and you don’t feel like your skirt weighs an extra 10 lbs. Win-win.

Gingham Wrap Skirt | The Styling

Styling a skirt is so fun because there are so many ways you can do it! My favorite way to style this wrap skirt with ruffle hem is to keep it simple so that the beauty of the skirt can shine through.

But you can style this skirt many different ways!

You can:

  • Add a graphic tee + cool sneakers
  • Throw on a soft sweater in white, black, or grey and tuck in the front (to show your shape) + some cute booties
  • Throw on a blazer over a cami and pair it with some killer heels for the office
  • Sandals + a tank top can take you anywhere! If it gets cold just bring a light cardigan.

How would you style this classic silhouette? Let me know in the comments!

Until next time friend 💕
