Pear Body Shape Style: The Beginner’s Guide

I must admit, the pear body shape is my favorite!

Why? Because that’s my shape!

It hasn’t always been my favorite though I will admit. Many times I wished I had an hourglass shape, or a rectangle, or etc.

Unfortunately we as women never seem to feel who we are is not good enough and we judge ourselves on our weight and our looks.

But are superheroes! We birth babies, run companies, organize, gather, serve, create, lead, love, etc. with everything we have.

Women are downright AMAZING in the things they can do, right?!

It’s time to STOP judging ourselves (and each other) on our weight and our looks. It’s time to stop wishing we looked like someone else or waiting to wear something until we’ve lost those last 10 lbs.

You are worthy and capable and beautiful just the way you are. Who you are is ENOUGH just the way you are right now.

Ok, I’ll get off my soapbox now but I think it’s so important for us to start celebrating ourselves and each other for our unique qualities and our inner strength!

One way to achieve this is to have a better understanding of your body shape and how to dress it. Once you understand that, you’ll be able to look amazing everyday no matter what your size or weight is.

Today, let’s dive in and learn more about the pear body shape and how to style it so you can look and feel your most fabulous self every single day.

What Is A Pear Body Shape?

The pear body shape is one of the five main body shapes.

Some of the characteristics of the pear body shape are:

  • Hips are wider than shoulders
  • Defined waist
  • Smallish bust

The pear body shape is similar to the hourglass and is the opposite of the inverted triangle. And it’s super easy to dress once you know the basics, I promise!

Why Is Knowing Your Body Shape Important?

Let’s try an analogy: let’s say you buy a new house and then you want to decorate it.

Do you just start buying random things without any knowledge of the house crossing your fingers that it’s going to look good?

Or, do you get a feel for the house first? Get to know the layout, the features, the current state of everything and then buy things that will enhance what the house already has?

Odds are, you’ll start by getting to know the house first, right?

Well, fashion is no different! You need to get to know the layout, features, and current state of everything about YOU before you go out and just start randomly buying clothes.

Knowing what you are starting with will keep you from having a closet full of clothes that you never wear.

How To Get Started With Dressing The Pear Body Shape

Dressing the pear body shape, and any shape, is all about balance. Those of us with the pear body shape have hips that are larger than our shoulders.

In order to balance that out, you must choose items that will either diminish the hips or broaden the shoulders. Choose clothes that bring them in harmony with each other.

However, the number one pear body shape advice is to always, always show off that defined waist! It’s a great feature and you should be proud of it.

A great easy way to achieve this is the add a belt to just about any look!

Tips For Flattering The Pear Body Shape

When it comes to finding things to flatter the pear body shape, you need to ask yourself the following questions about each item of clothing:

  • Is it fitted (not tight)?
  • Will my waist be defined?
  • Will it balance out my hips?
  • Does it bring attention to the upper half of my body?

If the answer is no to all of these questions, then it’s probably not going to work for you.

I say probably because some things can be made to work (like by adding a belt) but in general it probably won’t work without answering yes to some of these questions.

Regardless of your size, if you have a pear body shape, don’t try to hide under a lot of clothes. “Hiding” your body under clothes doesn’t work and isn’t flattering.

Let me say, I totally understand the desire to do this. After gaining over 50lbs when I was pregnant with my son and after he was born I still had a lot left to lose.

For months, I felt uncomfortable in my body and I just wanted to hide. I had to resist the urge to throw on an oversized tee and yoga pants almost every day lol.

But I did my best to resist and when I focused on answering the questions above every time I got dressed, I was able to flatter my body even though it was larger than I was used to.

This is why I know it IS possible to look good no matter what size you are!

Best Clothes For Pear Shaped Body

For years and years I only wore dresses & skirts. Every day. Except to the gym of course!

I only had a couple of pairs of pants and I only wore them if I had to.

Why did I do this?

It’s simple, dresses & skirts are super flattering to the pear shaped body!

A cute fit and flare dress is like a pear shaped girl’s secret weapon. A good fit and flare dress has a fitted flattering top, a defined waist, and a flare skirt that skims over the hips.

You can’t go wrong!

Skirts can do the same thing, just be sure to choose an appropriate top.

Stick to A line skirts, flares, gathered, and wrap skirts for the most flattering options. You can wear these styles in mini, midi, or maxi lengths but try to stick to those silhouettes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pear shapes should avoid wearing tiny tops, oversize items that hide their waist, and baggy shapeless items.

Every body shape is good, there is no shape that is better than the others. It’s all about workin what your momma gave you girl!
