Get Your Spring/Summer Wardrobe Ready in 5 Simple Steps

As the seasons change so should your wardrobe!

If you are anything like me when the weather starts warming up a bit it can be confusing to decide what to wear. Especially with the up and down temps during Spring.

Once summer gets here it feels like you are walking into a sauna every time you go outside. šŸ„µ

So once the last freeze has come and gone I start switching out my cold weather stuff for my warm weather stuff. Getting my closet prepped for the next season makes it so much easier to get dressed every day.

I’m not digging through stuff trying to find a seasonally appropriate item. And since I am not a morning person, anything that makes my morning easier is a win for me! Plus, creating outfits is soooo much easier when you can see all the possibilities right in front of you.

Don’t worry, updating your wardrobe doesn’t have to be time-consuming or expensive! I’m going to walk you through how to do it in 5 easy steps!

5 Simple Ways To Update Your Spring/Summer Wardrobe

Put Up The Winter Stuff

Now that winter is over (unless you live way up north and you just got snow in the middle of April – yikes) it’s time to put up all the boots, sweaters, jackets, and anything that clearly says “it’s freezing cold outside.”

But wait, why do I need to put up my winter stuff? Can’t I just leave it where it is?

Technically yes you can but I strongly encourage you not to. Seriously.

Every morning when you go to get dressed, you’ll be digging past your winter clothes trying to find the seasonally appropriate top/dress/skirt…etc. This not only takes time but makes putting outfits together much more difficult.

There is nothing more frustrating than trying to find that shirt you KNOW you have but somehow can’t find anywhere when you actually need it. Ah!

Make your mornings (and life!) easier by taking the time to put up your winter stuff. Just trust me on this!

I admit that I always feel a little sad putting up my boots because I love wearing boots so much! I might keep a pair or two out if they are cute and work with dresses too – like the white knee-high ones I am currently obsessed with šŸ˜.

All the rest go up on the upper shelves in a bag or a tote to keep the dust off. I keep my sneakers/slip-on shoes out because I wear them all year long.

The sweaters I will fold and put in a bag on the top shelf. As for the jackets, long sleeve tops, and wintery dresses – I typically move them to the hardest-to-reach place in my closet. Also, my pants go back there too.

That way, they are still hanging up but are no longer taking up valuable real estate in the front of my closet.

Pull Out The Warm Weather Items

Now it’s time to dig out all the warm weather items! You probably forgot what you have at this point so it might be a little like Christmas šŸ˜‚

...oooh I forgot I had those sandals they are so cute….

Maybe it’s just me but it’s nice to “rediscover” things you forgot you had.

After I drag everything out I move all the tank tops, light blouses, and “summery” tops front & center.

I move my spring/summer dresses to the front and also any light cardigans or sweaters go up front too.

Here in the South, you can go from sweating buckets outside to freezing inside because the AC is turned down so low. It’s important to be prepared for any and all fashion situations!

Ok, is your closet seasonally appropriate now?

Can you find all the spring/summer items?

Are your fall/winter items safely and neatly tucked away?

Good job! šŸ™Œ

Analyze Your Current Wardrobe Situation

Now is a good time to take a second to analyze what you currently own and your wardrobe from last spring/summer.

So ask yourself:

  • Did I like my wardrobe last year or do I want to change it up this year?

Personally, I wore shorts all last summer but I’m not feeling it this year. My pear-shaped body looks better in skirts and dresses so I’m determined to add those to my wardrobe. I’ll still need to keep the shorts within reach though because sometimes you need to wear shorts ya know?

I took inventory of all my skirts and dresses and determined which ones I liked and which ones I wasn’t really into. I thought about the colors and styles I liked that I might want to get more of.

It’s important to figure out what you love about the things you wear because it will make shopping so much easier!

Determine Your Lifestyle

Now before you go buying more stuff, let’s take a second to think about your lifestyle.

Ask yourself questions like:

  • What is my day-to-day life like?
  • Do I need to dress up every day for work or can I wear more casual items?
  • Do I love to go out on the town or stay closer to home?
  • Am I super active and need clothes that are easy to move in?
  • Do I have plenty of time to get ready every morning or am I rushing out the door?

I work from home and don’t really go out like I used to so I tend to stick with more causal items. Also, we are outside a lot in the evenings because my kid loves to play with the neighbor’s kids.

I figured out in the last step that I don’t want to stick to my shorts and tank top routine this year and that I want to switch to wearing more dresses. Since I know I am mostly at home and outside with the kids I want to make sure I have some easy casual dresses that I can throw on and go.

They still need to be cute though so I look pulled together and not frumpy!

My go-to dresses in the past have been cute flowy fit and flare ones that are above the knee. But since I’m outside more I will need to switch to a longer-length dress. There is nothing more annoying than wearing a short dress and having to hold it down because the wind might blow it up and show your under-bits.

This year I think I will save my shorter dresses for the once a month that I –fingers crossed– actually go somewhere worth dressing up for.

Instead, I am going to stick to a midi or maxi length in both dresses and skirts. I really love the midi length because it’s long enough that you can bend down and move in it but not so long that you have to worry about tripping over it.

Time To Shop

Now comes the fun part, buying new stuff! šŸŽ‰

I gave myself a budget of $100-150 so I can buy a few things without going overboard and making my husband crazy. With that in mind, I decided I wanted a couple of dresses or skirts that were more midi to maxi length.

I also love graphic tees paired with just about anything so I scooped up a couple from Target to pair with my skirts. The ones from Target are inexpensive and cute!

I also ordered a couple of dresses from Shein. Since I am a sewer I decided to make a couple of things as well.

Oh! And another thing to keep in mind is shoes. I will sometimes buy a new pair of sandals for spring/summer if the ones I have are worn out or if there is a new style out that I love. I am currently eyeing these steve madden ones.

Write down a list of things you might want to add to your Spring/Summer wardrobe and then hit the stores either in person or online! Remember that clothes tend to look much better on a person than they do on a hanger so if you love something try it on!

Conclusion: Get Your Spring/Summer Wardrobe Ready In 5 Simple Steps
